When I first saw all the angled layers of soil, I thought I was looking at a zillion years of upthrust sediment layers. Not so. These are all petrified sand dunes. The color is usually washed out by the water that cements the sand together, but sometimes the colors stay. That's when you get pretty red rocks like this.
